There seems to be a lot that will be unfolding in these last few school days of 2017. I hope this post keeps you informed.
First off, the Grade 8s went on a field trip to visit the RRTVA options this last Tuesday. It was a busy day, and though they didn't get to spend a lot of time at any one place, they did get the chance to see a lot of different options that are available as they think about high school. There will be a Trades Camp held in the New Year - but it will be run differently than it has been in the past. Students who have shown interested (at home or at school) will have the opportunity to spend one 1/2 day of school at ONE of the trades available. Since spots are limited these opportunities will be made available to those kids who have shown genuine interest. If you have heard your son/daughter talk about this at home, as this would be a good indicator of a student who deserves the opportunity.
Class Party Plan
A small group of students from Room 7 has planned some activities for this week to celebrate the holidays. They had a sign up for Secret Santa. Ask your son/daughter if they signed up. If they did, they will have drawn a name. The kids established the following secret santa guidelines:
This was optional, so not all the kids in the class signed up!
In addition they want to have a Pot Luck lunch on Friday. The planning crew put up sign up sheets for students to bring something. Please check in with your child to see if they signed up. If you have any questions, let me know.
Friday afternoon there will be school-wide activities. The options will include: board games and reading, outdoor activities (skating and sledding), movies, or a dance. Kids will be asked to choose an activity sometime this week.
WE are Rafiki
Beginning on Wednesday, the Parkside Leadership committee will be selling Rafiki bracelets for the WE foundation. Students in Room 7 have watched videos to learn about how this initiative helps out others in Africa. The bracelets are sold for $10.00. Half of the money goes to the Mamas in Africa who made the bracelets, and the other half goes to the WE foundation. Students will have choice over with "pillar" they wish to support depending on the bracelet they buy.
If students wish to purchase a bracelet for themselves or for a gift, they are encouraged to bring $10 for each they want to buy on Wednesday. There is a limited supply and in the past they have sold out quickly. They will be sold until Friday - or until supply runs out.
I am looking forward to the last week of classes with Room 7. We will continue to work on fictional writing in ELA, algebra in math, optics in Science, and Ancient Greece in social studies. Between that we will be sure to find time to celebrate the season and enjoy each other's company.
Please let me know if you have any questions about the week ahead.
