When we started memoir writing in September we started with 6 word memoirs. I wanted students to focus on an idea and try and express it using only a few words. Now that our class has access to iPads we were able to go back and do some work representing them visually. These were the first ones students did. Next week I will have them go back and pick their most thoughtful one that they want to represent - the ones that give advice and make readers think.
This task has served a few purposes beyond the writing. While working on the visual representation students were getting familiar with using the iPads. We were able to discuss how to find images online that were okay to modify (through creative commons), figured out how to save images on the iPads, and then they spent time playing around with a few apps that would help them create these visuals. I love having students do this work without me teaching them.
